A Flexible Alternative to GCSEs

At WLZ Group, we recognise that the traditional GCSE route isn't always the right fit for everyone. High-pressure exams can sometimes act as a barrier to students showing their true potential.

We are proud to announce that WLZ Group is now an officially accredited BTEC provider, offering a practical, flexible, and supportive alternative pathway starting from Year 10 upwards.

What We Offer: BTEC Level 1 Introductory in Vocational Studies

This fully accredited qualification is specifically designed for students who thrive in a coursework-based environment. It focuses on practical skill-building and continuous assessment rather than a final exam.

Core English and Maths Provision

While the BTEC forms the core of the practical curriculum, core literacy and numeracy remain essential. All students will continue to study English and Maths alongside their BTEC. We tailor this to the individual: depending on what is most appropriate for the student, they can study either traditional GCSEs or Functional Skills qualifications

How It Works: Tailored to the Individual Student

One of the greatest benefits of this qualification is its total flexibility. Because students often join WLZ Group for different lengths of time, the course can be completely tailored to match their specific timeline - whether they are with us for just a single term or for two full academic years.

There are three distinct qualification tiers available, determined by the number of completed modules and total study hours achieved:

  • Award: Consists of 3 modules total (Core Unit A2 + 2 skill-based B units). Ideal for short-term placements.
  • Certificate: Consists of 5 modules total (Core Units A1 and A2 + 3 skill-based B units).
  • Diploma: Consists of 10 modules total (Core Units A1, A2, A3, and A4 + 6 skill-based B units). Ideal for students staying with us for a full one to two-year cycle.

The Curriculum Structure

The course is split into two distinct types of modules:

  • Group A (Core Units): These units focus on personal growth and preparation for the future. Every single student on this pathway will complete Unit 2A: Developing a Personal Progression Plan.
  • Group B (Sector Skills Units): These are practical, skill-based modules covering a wide variety of industries, ranging from Exploring Physics to Planning a Safe Childcare Environment.

Please Note: Students do not have free choice over their Group B modules. Units are carefully selected by WLZ Group based on tutor expertise and facility scheduling to ensure the highest quality of delivery.

Assessment: No Final Exams

There are no high-stakes external exam papers at the end of this course.

  • 100% Coursework: Every module is completed via continuous coursework assessment.
  • Internally Moderated: All units are assessed internally by our tutors and moderated directly by us, ensuring a calm, predictable, and supportive environment for the students as they build their portfolios.

Future Pathways: What Can It Lead To?

The BTEC Level 1 in Vocational Studies is designed to be a stepping stone. It provides young people with the confidence, study skills, and accredited portfolio needed to unlock post-16 education.

Completing this course gives students a solid foundation to progress onto further college courses, apprenticeships, or training in specific sectors such as:

  • Childcare
  • Health and Social Care
  • Art and Design
  • And many other vocational pathways.
