Wondering who we are, what we do, and how to get in touch? We've got you. Here is everything you need to know about WLZ Group, from the way we teach to the qualifications we can put in your learner's hands.
Who we are
- We are a Worcestershire based tuition provider for learners aged 8 and above, working from our centres in Worcester and Kidderminster, in learners' homes, and online.
- We are independent and voluntarily OFSTED registered, and every tutor is qualified, enhanced DBS certified and an expert in their subject. It is not a requirement for a private tuition organisation to be OFSTED registered, but here at WLZ we believe that our learners deserve the very best, therefore we are registered to ensure that our centres are always the best they can possibly be.
- We believe that education should start with the learner and adapt to suit their individual needs, which is why our approach balances academic progress with a strong focus on wellbeing, so learners feel supported, understood and capable of achieving their potential.
- We are also led by people with lived experience of SEND and of the education system, so we understand the journey from the inside.
What we offer
- One to one tuition, carefully tailored to the individual
- Small group tuition for learners who thrive alongside their peers
- Exam preparation for SATs, Functional Skills, GCSEs, A levels and entrance exams.
- An accredited AQA and Pearson Edexcel GCSE exam centre based in Worcester, which means private candidates can sit their GCSE exams with us, including GCSE resits.
- An accredited BTEC centre (Kidderminster)
Specialist support
Some, though not all, of our learners have specific learning needs, and our tutors adapt sessions to suit these. Our specialist provision includes:
- SEND support, including dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia
- EHCP and EOTAS packages.
- AQA Unit Award Scheme certification, offering evidence of knowledge and experience in a wide range of subjects. This way learners can receive awards per unit, giving them frequent validation of skills.
- The Thrive approach (more on this below)
- Functional Skills - ideal for those who prefer a less academic approach to subjects up to GCSE equivalency (Level 2).
The Thrive approach:
- At WLZ, the Thrive Approach is the framework behind how we support our learners' emotional and social development, not just their academic progress. It is a structured, trauma-sensitive approach grounded in neuroscience, child development and attachment theory, and it treats emotional wellbeing as a prerequisite for learning rather than an add-on to it.
- For our tutors, that means looking at the whole learner. We build an understanding of where a young person is developmentally, what their behaviour might be communicating, and what they need from the adults around them in order to feel safe enough to engage. Sessions are then adapted accordingly, whether a learner needs more reassurance, more structure, or simply time and space to regulate before the work begins, or during their working time.
- Because Thrive is designed to create a consistent culture around a child, the strategies used in our sessions can be carried into the home and the classroom, so the support a learner receives does not stop at the end of a lesson.
- For learners with SEND, or those who have found mainstream education difficult, this approach is often the difference between tuition that sticks and tuition that does not. It sits alongside our SEND support, EHCP and EOTAS packages, and our work with schools, SENCOs and local authorities across Worcestershire.
Where we teach
- At our Worcester centre, Worcester Learning Zone (WLZ Tuition)
- At Wise Owl Tuition in Kidderminster
- At home, with tutors who come to you
- Online, live and interactive
With flexible scheduling, we fit around your life rather than disrupting it.
Who it is for
Young people aged 8 to 18, plus adults. We welcome enquiries from parents, schools, SENCOs and local authorities. We also support learners who are not currently accessing education in a school or college, those who are electively home educated, and those who are on an EOTAS package.
How it works
- Choose your desired subject from our extensive list.
- Choose your place and time.
- Sit back and let us match you with the tutor best suited to your goals, following a careful assessment of your needs by our experienced admin team.
What happens next
We offer a free consultation rather than a free trial lesson. It is a chance to talk through your learner's needs, tour the tuition centres, and tell us about their goals, strengths and challenges, so we can tailor tuition just for them.
Sessions last 55 minutes, with a five minute comfort break when sessions run back to back, and you get your own student portal log in for progress notes, session content, worksheets, homework and your fees record.
